Mass estimates from stellar proper motions: The mass of ω Centauri
نویسندگان
چکیده
A projected mass estimator and a maximum likelihood estimator are developed to best determine the mass of stellar clusters from proper motion data. Both methods effectively account and correct for errors in the velocities, and provide an unbiased and robust estimate of the cluster mass. Using an extensive proper motion study of ω Centauri by van Leeuwen et al. (2000), we estimate the mass of ω Centauri using these two different methods to be 4.6× 106M⊙ [d/5.1kpc] 3 with a 3% statistical error and a 6% systematic error.

The Stellar Dynamics of ω Centauri
The stellar dynamics of ω Centauri are inferred from the radial velocities of 469 stars measured with CORAVEL (Mayor et al. 1997). Rather than fit the data to a family of models, we generate estimates of all dynamical functions nonparametrically, by direct operation on the data. The cluster is assumed to be oblate and edge-on but mass is not assumed to follow light. The mean motions are consist...

متن کاملNew Limits on an Intermediate Mass Black Hole in Omega Centauri: Ii. Dynamical Models
We present a detailed dynamical analysis of the projected density and kinematical data available for the globular cluster ω Centauri. We solve the spherical anisotropic Jeans equation for a given density profile to predict the projected profiles of the RMS velocity σ̄(R), in each of the three orthogonal coordinate directions (line of sight, proper motion radial, and proper motion tangential). Th...
متن کاملThe Origin of the Double Main Sequence in Ω Centauri: Helium Enrichment Due to Gas Fueling from Its Ancient Host Galaxy ?
Recent observational studies of ω Centauri by Hubble Space Telescope have discovered a double main sequence in the color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of its stellar populations. The stellar population with the blue main sequence (bMS) is observationally suggested to have a helium abundance much larger, by ∆Y ∼ 0.12, than that of the red main sequence (rMS). By using somewhat idealized models in wh...
متن کاملThe pure non - collisional Blue Straggler population in the giant stellar system
We have used high spatial resolution data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and wide-field ground-based observations to search for blue straggler stars (BSS) over the entire radial extent of the large stellar system ω Centauri. We have detected the largest population of BSS ever observed in any stellar system. Even though the sample is restricted to the brightest portion of the BSS sequence...
